Israeli propagande spread the story that the Egyptian soldiers ran away leaving their shoes behind.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Sch&#8217;mah Israel!<\/h1>\n<p><em><strong>A poem by Erich Fried<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When we were oppressed<br \/>\nI was one of you.<br \/>\nHow can I remain with you<br \/>\nwhen you become oppressors?<\/p>\n<p>Your longing was<br \/>\nto be like the other nations<br \/>\nthat murdered you.<br \/>\nNow you have become like them.<\/p>\n<p>You outlived those<br \/>\nwhose cruelty you suffered.<br \/>\nDoes not their cruelty<br \/>\nlive on in you?<\/p>\n<p>You told the defeated:<br \/>\n&#8220;Take off your shoes!&#8221;<br \/>\nthen like the scapegoat<br \/>\nyou drove them into the desert.<\/p>\n<p>Into the vast mosque of Death<br \/>\nwhose sandals are of sand.<br \/>\nBut they did not bear the sin<br \/>\nyou tried to lay upon them.<\/p>\n<p>The imprint of naked feet<br \/>\nin the desert sand<br \/>\nwill outlast all traces<br \/>\nof your bombs and your tanks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erich Fried, biographical notes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Born \u2013 Vienna, 1921. Jewish. Father killed by Nazis in 1938. Took refuge in Britain in August, 1938. During the war \u2013 factory worker, librarian, chemist. Since 1946 \u2013 editor, writer, translator, poet. Awarded a Schiller prize, Stuttgart, 1965. Translator of Shakespeare (six plays) into German, also of Dylan Thomas (five works), T.S. Eliot, John Arden.
